Cancer is a growing and devastating disease worldwide, which not only burdens health but also the economy. Standardized chemotherapy, although intended to be curative, weakens the immune system and causes significant side effects. Astragalus membranaceus has a long tradition in the treatment of serious diseases, especially cancer.
Researchers have shown a growing interest in this plant root for its potential application in various types of cancer. Literature review revealed that Astragalus membranaceus can modulate the immune system during drug therapy, improve physical fitness, and prolong the life expectancy of patients.
This plant is considered one of the best adaptogenic herbs with protective effects against chronic stress and cancer. The natural phytoconstituents such as formononetin, astragalus polysaccharide and astragalosides have been extensively studied and show high potential in fighting cancer.
Some of them are already being used in clinical trials to overcome cancer-related fatigue. This study provides an insight into the current status of Astragalus membranaceus in cancer therapy.
